How Utah paychecks are calculated
Utah cut its income tax rate again for 2026 — down to 4.45% under S.B. 60 — and employers updated Publication 14 withholding for pay periods starting June 1. The headline rate is flat, but your paycheck is not always "gross × 4.45%." Schedule 7 subtracts a withholding allowance that phases out once Utah taxable wages pass $9,348 for single filers ($18,696 married).
On $75,000 single with a federal W-4 on file, Utah withholding is $3,337.50 — about $128.37 per bi-weekly check on the state line. At $40,000, the allowance still matters: withholding is $1,693.48 versus $1,780.00 if your employer must use the no-W-4 flat path.
Utah taxable wages start from federal AGI after pre-tax 401(k), HSA, and health premiums. There is no city wage tax in the Wasatch Front corridor on ordinary W-2 income — federal and FICA still apply everywhere. Change a field above and the breakdown updates in your browser.
Federal W-4 and Publication 14
Utah does not make you fill out a separate state withholding certificate for most jobs. Payroll reads your federal Form W-4 marital status and runs the Pub 14 formula. Married filing jointly on $75,000 shows $3,099.45 state tax versus $3,337.50 for single — mostly allowance thresholds, not a different statutory rate.
