How the Virginia paycheck calculator works
This tool models a Virginia paycheck the way payroll does. Start with gross pay — an annual salary, or an hourly rate multiplied by your weekly hours across 52 working weeks. From there it subtracts your pre-tax elections (traditional 401(k), HSA, and employer health/dental/vision premiums) before applying the current-year federal brackets, the federal standard deduction, Social Security up to the annual wage base, and Medicare on all wages.
Virginia's layer comes next: the state applies its own four-bracket schedule to Virginia taxable income after the Virginia standard deduction, your Form VA-4 personal exemptions, and any state-specific subtractions you claim. Because Virginia has no local income tax, nothing else is added for city or county taxes.
Everything runs client-side in your browser — the same tax engine that renders this page pre-calculates your results before you type, then updates them live with every keystroke. No account, no submit button, and no data leaves your device.
Virginia income tax rates
Virginia taxes income at four flat rates with the same thresholds for every filing status — unlike the federal code, joint filers do not get doubled brackets. The standard deduction is $8,750 for single filers and $17,500 for joint filers, and each personal exemption claimed on Form VA-4 removes another $930 from state taxable income.
| Rate | Virginia taxable income |
|---|---|
| 2% | $0 – $3,000 |
| 3% | $3,000 – $5,000 |
| 5% | $5,000 – $17,000 |
| 5.75% | Over $17,000 |

Federal income tax brackets
Federal tax comes out first for most workers. The current-year brackets below apply after the federal standard deduction — $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for joint filers, and $24,150 for head of household — plus an additional deduction of $2,050 per qualifying factor (age 65+ or blind) for most filers.
| Rate | Single | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $0 – $12,400 | $0 – $24,800 |
| 12% | $12,401 – $50,400 | $24,801 – $100,800 |
| 22% | $50,401 – $107,475 | $100,801 – $200,950 |
| 24% | $107,476 – $205,250 | $200,951 – $383,900 |
| 32% | $205,251 – $260,600 | $383,901 – $487,450 |
| 35% | $260,601 – $640,600 | $487,451 – $768,700 |
| 37% | Over $640,600 | Over $768,700 |

FICA: Social Security and Medicare
FICA is separate from income tax and applies to virtually all wage income. Social Security withholds 6.2% of wages up to the annual wage base ($184,500 for 2026); earnings above the cap stop accruing Social Security tax, which is why high earners see their FICA rate fall later in the year. Medicare withholds 1.45% on every dollar with no cap, plus an additional 0.9% on wages above $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for joint filers.
Pre-tax retirement and HSA deductions do not reduce FICA wages — only Section 125 (premium) deductions do — so the calculator applies 401(k) and HSA contributions to income tax but not to FICA.
Overtime and tips: Virginia does not conform to OBBBA
The same overtime dollar is taxed differently by the IRS and Virginia
Federal law now exempts overtime premium pay (the extra half-time portion) up to $12,500 per year for single filers ($25,000 joint) and tip income up to $25,000 from federal income tax. Virginia has not conformed to these exemptions: overtime premium pay and tips remain fully taxable on your Virginia return. Enter overtime or tip income in Advanced options and this calculator will correctly exclude it from federal tax while keeping it in your Virginia taxable income.
