How Indiana paychecks are calculated
Indiana stacks state and county tax on the same wage base — and that base is not your gross salary. Start with gross pay. Pre-tax 401(k), HSA, and health premiums reduce federal AGI, and Indiana withholding uses that figure. Subtract $1,000 for each WH-4 exemption allowance. Multiply what is left by 2.95% for state tax and by your county resident rate for local tax.
On $75,000 as a single filer with zero WH-4 allowances in Marion County, Indiana taxable wages are $75,000 — state tax $2,213, county tax $1,515, about $2,226 per bi-weekly check after federal and FICA too.
Two workers at the same $75,000 salary in Indianapolis and Valparaiso can have different take-home pay because Marion County's rate is 2.02% while Porter County's is 0.5% — a -$1,140 annual gap on identical gross pay here. Every figure updates live in your browser.
Form WH-4 and Indiana withholding
Form WH-4 is Indiana's equivalent of adjusting how much comes out of each check. Each exemption allowance removes $1,000 of annual wages from Indiana taxable income before state and county rates run — so one allowance lowers both lines at once. On $75,000 in Marion County, one allowance drops state tax from $2,213 to $2,183 and county tax from $1,515 to $1,495.
Federal filing status still drives your federal bracket in this calculator. Indiana's flat 2.95% does not change with marital status, but married filers often see lower federal withholding — which is why $75,000 in Marion County produces $60,895 take-home for married filing jointly versus $57,865 for single here.
| Filing status | IN taxable wages | State tax | County tax | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | $75,000 | $2,213 | $1,515 | $57,865 |
| Married filing jointly | $75,000 | $2,213 | $1,515 | $60,895 |
Indiana county income tax
County tax is not a surcharge on state tax — it is a separate percentage of Indiana taxable wages. Porter County, at 0.5%, is among the lowest. Marion (Indianapolis) is 2.02%. Pick your county in the calculator or enter the rate from your pay stub.
| County | County rate | State tax | County tax | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marion County | 2.02% | $2,213 | $1,515 | $57,865 |
| Lake County | 1.5% | $2,213 | $1,125 | $58,255 |
| Allen County | 1.59% | $2,213 | $1,193 | $58,188 |
| Hamilton County | 1.1% | $2,213 | $825 | $58,555 |
| Porter County | 0.5% | $2,213 | $375 | $59,005 |
| Dubois County | 1.2% | $2,213 | $900 | $58,480 |
Lake County at 1.5% costs $1,125 in county tax on $75,000 here — $58,255 take-home versus $57,865 in Marion County. Moving counties without changing salary can swing take-home by hundreds a year.

Weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly pay in Indiana
Pay frequency changes how much lands in each check, not the annual tax total. Indiana withholding annualizes wages, applies state and county rates once, then divides net pay across paychecks. On $75,000 in Marion County with zero allowances, bi-weekly take-home is about $2,226 per check versus $4,822 on a monthly schedule.
| Pay frequency | Paychecks / yr | Gross per paycheck | IN state per paycheck | County per paycheck | Net per paycheck |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,442 | $42.55 | $29.13 | $1,113 |
| Bi-Weekly | 26 | $2,885 | $85.10 | $58.27 | $2,226 |
| Semi-Monthly | 24 | $3,125 | $92.19 | $63.13 | $2,411 |
| Monthly | 12 | $6,250 | $184.38 | $126.25 | $4,822 |
